Whether you are thinking about day trips, weekends away or minibreaks, Edinburgh is a perfect option. The capital of Scotland has so much to offer and do, the sights are spectacular and the hillside is incredibly inviting. Added to this, Edinburgh has a wide variety of top attractions and activities that are ideal for families, couples, singles, the elderly… pretty much anyone.

If you are considering visiting Edinburgh, you should familiarise yourself with not only the journey there, but also the area itself. Learn where all the main attractions are, the location of where your accommodation there is and start thinking about how you are going to get yourself around Edinburgh once you’re there.

You can drive yourself there using your own vehicle. If you intend to do this, it is a good idea to take your vehicle for a service to make sure it is up for the long journey. You’ll also need to plan your route there and at least one alternative route, just in case there’s a problem with your original route. Finally, you should also think about taking entertainment, food and drinks with you, and planning rest stops at your preferred service stations.

You could take public transport like a bus, coach or train. If this is your preferred way of travelling you will need to book tickets and decide how you intend to get to the station you are being collected from (you may need to book a taxi or ask a friend for a lift). You should also think about how you are going to get from your drop-off point in Cardiff, to your hotel.

Getting to Cardiff by minibus. If you choose the minibus hire with driver option you really don’t have much other planning to do. The driver will take care of pretty much everything for you, including dropping you off at your hotel.

  • The next thing you should think about is what you’d like to do and see while you’re in Cardiff. There are lots of things to do in Cardiff, if you don’t think about it in advance, you might not get the chance to do everything you want.

    • Castles, forts and Historical Places:
      • Cardiff Castle: A stunning castle which was once a Roman fort, a Norman stronghold and a Victorian Gothic palace.
      • Bishops Palace: the ruins of a medieval palace and residence to the Bishops of Llandaff
      • Castell Coch: otherwise known as the ‘Red Castle’, Castell Coch is located in the ancient beech woods of forest Fawr.
      • Flat Holm Island: located off the coast of Cardiff, is rich in wildlife and steeped in history.
      • St John’s Parish Church: dating back to the 12th century, this church is one of Cardiff’s oldest medieval buildings.
      • Llandaff Cathedral: one of the oldest Christian sites in Britain.

Choosing what to do and see

  • Museums, experiences and tours:
    • St Fagans National Museum of History: Cardiff’s most visited attraction.
    • Royal Mint Experience: Tour the coin production factory and strike your own coin to take home.
    • Welsh Mining Experience: at Rhondda Heritage Park, tour one of the last remaining coal mines in the area, including a surface tour and an underground experience.
    • Museum of Cardiff: a museum that explores the city’s story and heritage.
    • Hensol Castle Distillery: the first full scale gin distillery, including visitor experience, gin school and bottling plant, in South Wales.
  • Nature, parks and recreation:
    • Cardiff Bay Barrage: situated in a stunning maritime setting, the barrage has fantastic views of Cardiff Bay and the Severn Estuary. Perfect for relaxing strolls, the bay also includes a play area, skate park, outdoor gym, lots of exhibitions and a café.
    • Dyffryn Gardens: 55 acres of Edwardian gardens set around a unique Victorian mansion house.
    • Animal Wall: designed by architect William Burges for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, the animal wall is one of the most delightful and photographed historic features in Cardiff.

Making your way around Cardiff

A minibus hire Cardiff can help you to visit all of these places, or at least as many as possible. What’s more, by using a minibus instead of a car you can make sure your party all get to stay together and enjoy the experience as a group. And, if you hire a minibus with a driver, then none of you have to worry about being the designated driver or the responsibility that comes with this. Instead, you can sit back and relax, let someone else plan your routes and have fun with your friends.

Before you travel to Cardiff, research the local taxi and minibus firms, and/or research companies local to you who are happy to take you to Cardiff and maybe even stay with you during the duration of your visit. Price up how much it would cost to hire a minibus and even a driver, you might find that it’s actually cheaper (or at least not much more expensive) than driving your own vehicle. Especially when you take into consideration the cost of additional things like petrol and parking charges.
